Artist's Comments~~**~~ I am officially frustrated with this piece. I've been working on this off and on for months now, and I cannot think of what I want to do with this for the life of me. It's...pissing...me...off... I really could use some critique and advice so I can get some ideas of what this piece could be. I'm still trying to work on bettering my humans since I've drawn pretty much nothing but horses my whole life. I'm turning off comments and only allowing critiques on this one because I really need help. So I apologize in advance to those of you who are not subscribers. Thanks for any advice you guys can give me! ~~**~~ FAQ #94: Can I use the images I find on deviantART? ~~**~~ Artwork & character design are © to Rebecca A. Critiques
As far as critique goes, I have to say I agree with what *mustang-thunder said about the eye... that's what stood out for me the most, is the lack of depth in it... I'd suggest shading above and in the corner at the nose-side. Another thing that I find helps with making the eyes come alive is to shade the white of the eye-ball, this makes the white less domineering and the eye more round-looking. Something that makes the eye more part of the face as well is to put a light version of the skin-tone in the eye-white, because the eye-whites tend to reflect the skin a bit (they're glossy and all).
Other than the eye-area, you could maybe put some gentle purplish and bluish tones in the skin (in the shades-part mostly). I still have trouble with this, but if done well it really helps with the alive-ness of the face
I hope this critique helped at least a bit
A few things caught my eye. First of all, the structure underneath the eye is a little "prominent." Humans have deep set eyes, deeper than many people think. There's a brow bone, and the cheekbones end before the eye starts at the bottom. In a nutshell, they don't just "sit on top." Deeper shadows around the eye can fix that. Especially where the corner of the eye meets the nose. Right now, the eye seems a little "small" because of the lack of shadows around it to make it seem more in proportion to the rest of the face.
Another note- the skin under the bottom lip seems a little "rounded." I think this varies person to person, but I'd double-check a ref. I've seen photos where the bottom lip "curves out" a little more, especially in women, who have fuller bottom lips.
I won't get incredibly picky because I could never even attempt something like this! It's a beautiful WIP and I look forward to the finished piece!
